Horror of Leviathan
"The battle had raged on for days now. Slow going. The old veterans would have called it trench warfare. But there were no trenches, just the shelled out husks of buildings and the death-traps that streets and alleys had become. We engaged the Throg in the area around the city's main plaza, called forward from the formation's rear guard. It seems the front lines had taken a pounding, and so we were moved up to shore up the lines. It was dirty fighting. Every pile of rubble seemed to hold grotesque lump of flesh waiting to spew acid at our mechs' legs. Every building had to be checked for Throg lying in wait, looking to strike at us from behind.
Once we reached the front lines, it was a bloody mess. The wreckage of mechs and corpses of alien beasts littered the engagement zone, testament of a prolonged struggle for meters of pavement gained or lost. I had little time to reflect on the remains of past carnage, the battle was upon us with little warning. Blow for blow, shot for shot, we met the enemy. No advantage was overlooked or checked. Like I said, it was dirty fighting, the desperate kind where you throw away all pretense of tactics or military maneuvers. It was just a fight for survival. It was as if the fighting here would never end, a melee over the heart of some city I barely remember the name of. And then it happened.
The ground heaved under my mech, throwing me off balance for a moment. Luckily, the Throg were caught off guard as well, they didn't take the chance to strike. My first thought was an orbital bombardment. But as I looked about, scanning the sky, I couldn't find a trace of fire. No parting clouds, no vapor trails of heavy shells. It happened again, more violently. A hollowed out building toppled, crumbling to rubble as it shook from it's foundations. My heart was beating in my chest like an air-hammer as I saw the center of the plaza rise up. The pavement split, rolling away like ice atop a frozen lake as something pushed it's way from under the ground. The booming sound of some horn overloaded my mech's sensors for a moment. The Throg fared worse. A few of them collapsed, spasming as whatever that sound was sent the others trembling. Slowly the thing emerged, like some great black insect forcing it's way from it's cocoon.
I watches as it rose higher and higher, the most titanic thing I had ever seen. The hiss and thump of pistons and the low roar of some infernal engines echoing off of the skeletal buildings around the plaza. It bristled with massive spines larger than some mechs, pulling itself from the huge hole on six crab-like legs. With another bellow of that horn it brought itself up to it's full height. It towered above us all, even the Throg. Not even that enormous Monster would come up to eye level with this thing. And it did have eyes, gazing red out from that blank, eerie face. It looked at me. Right at me, and I could almost feel a cold grip tightening around my chest. Douglas charged at it. He had always been cocky and reckless in that melee Pillbox of his. It was stupid. Maybe he thought his shields would hold out against that thing. They didn't. I could do nothing but watch as one of those huge legs game down, right through his shield and then his cockpit. That seemed to snap everyone out of their daze. We all opened fire, even the Throg. We tried, all of us. We might as well had been throwing stones. Slowly the thing turned towards the Throg first. I could see the red glow, like some hellish halo illuminating the massive machine as it unleashed it's weapons. Two of the Throg were turned into smoking craters right before my eyes. Another was so riddled with holes, I could see what might have been organs oozing out of it's massive wound into a steaming pile at it's feet. Then it started to turn towards us.
I'm not sure what happened after that. I don't even know how I survived. Or what happened to the rest of my lance. I just remember waking up for a moment as an evac unit started to pull me from what was left of my cockpit. I just... I hope I never see that thing again.. "
