The steeper ballistic arc on the Mortar Cannons means these things will tend to land closer to the mech then the Howitzer shots.  It's also easier to arc these things over terrain.  There's a butter zone where you can get these and the mortar shots to all land in a tight cluster of explosions, maximizing your damage potential.
