The ant laser is a specialized heatray for the Fire Ant.
History
The weapon name is a bit of a misnomer. These lasers are more akin to MASERs, firing beams of amplified microwave energy that greatly heats anything down the line of fire. Atmospheric gases glow along the length of the beam due to the sheer amount of heat forced into it producing a laser-like glow. In operation it handles much like a laser, but the mech struck by such a weapon has its heat risen by the strike. Against more flammable opponents, such as bio-mech this weapon can set them alight at range, doing damage over time. A pilot who can manage repeat hits with this weapon can exhaust even hardier mechs, forcing them to either let up on fire, or overheat.
